New Head of Department of Social Services Appointed in Forsyth County | Local News

Christine M. Dowdell has been named the new director of the Forsyth County Department of Social Services following a nationwide search, the county announced.

Dowdell is currently director of the Chowan County Department of Social Services in eastern North Carolina. She starts her new job here on February 28.

County officials said that as DSS director here, Dowdell will oversee a department of more than 500 employees.

The DSS offers a variety of benefits to help individuals and families, provides protective services for children and adults, oversees foster and adoption services, and enforces child support.

“The director of social services is a critical position for our community,” said Shontell Robinson, deputy county manager and director of health and social services. “Christine’s experience, credentials and passion for serving our most vulnerable populations came to a head during our rigorous recruitment and selection process.”

Dowdell has been in her current role since 2018 and has nearly 30 years of varied experience in the social services field.

She has served as a Mecklenburg County Child Welfare Supervisor, program consultant and trainer with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, licensed school social worker, case manager, and student teacher. with learning disabilities.
