MORGANTOWN, WV — Twenty West Virginia University student-athletes have been named to the 2022 At-Large All-Big 12 Academic Teams, the conference announced Wednesday.

The team recognizes the academic achievements of student-athletes at institutions who compete in sports outside of Big 12 competition, including rifle shooting and men’s soccer.

Fifth-year senior defenseman Kevin Morris of the men’s soccer team (business data analysis) and senior Verena Zaisberger of the Carabinieri (music) team each achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average (GPA) and represented the Mountaineers on the first team. Morris and Zaisberger were two of three conference-wide roster winners who earned a 4.0 GPA.

Twelve other student-athletes from the men’s soccer team joined Morris on this year’s team, including ryan baer (sports management), Ciro Bourlot Jaeggi (general business), Ryan Crooks (business & communication course), Aaron DenkGracia (general business), Dyon Dromers (sports management), Pau Jimenez Albelda (sports management & multidisciplinary studies), Kyle Lehnert (sport and exercise psychology), ike swinger (management), Steven Tekesky (sports management) and Bjarne Thiesen (General Affairs), all of whom have been named to the first team.

Besides, Luke McCormick (criminology) and Sergio Ors Navarro (physiology of exercise) of men’s soccer were recognized in the second team.

For the rifle squad, Malori Brown (physiological exercise), Jared Eddy (physiological exercise), Tal Engler (physiological exercise), Becca Lamb (computing), Molly McGhin (psychology) and Calista Smoyer (communication sciences and disorders) all joined Zaisberger in the first team.

First-team members are those who have maintained a GPA of 3.20 or better, while second-team selections hold a GPA of 3.0 to 3.19. A total of 69 student-athletes were recognized on league teams.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, either cumulatively or over the previous two semesters. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of residence hall. Senior student-athletes who have competed for at least two years and meet all criteria except participation percentage are also eligible.
